NICAO
Born & raised in London, Nicão began DJ’ing at the age of 16 – diving head-first into the capital’s House & Garage scene. Within 3 months he’d developed the skills to feature on some of West London’s prominent pirate radio stations, including Freeze FM, Ice Cold & Westside Radio – under the tutelage of his cousin, ‘Purple’, who was an MC of somewhat cult figure proportions in the UK’s burgeoning Grime scene. The development continued and manifested itself with appearances on the legendary ‘Sidewinder’ UK Garage series amongst a host of other events, while dipping his toes in the more placid pastime of curating mixtapes and compilations for corporations such as GSK and bars around the west side of London area.
There are few better apprenticeships for a budding DJ than working in a record shop, at the very heart & nucleus of the scene, and the 4+ years Nic spent working at Soho’s infamous Uptown Records provided him with an irreplaceable opportunity that now borders on extinction for disk jockeys of the present and future. He expanded his knowledge there and broadened his horizons further to all forms of electronic & dance music, and progressed to be the buyer for the House music section for 2 years. This role no doubt helped shape the musical tastes & selections for a crop of London’s upcoming young DJs who frequented the West End for records. The inevitable decline of analog-format music sales made the move onto pastures new timely and it was then that he went on to study a BA in Music Technology at UWL to harness the skills already acquired through his career in music so far.
All this has culminated Nic’s own very distinct style, taste and selection. Having thrown parties across the span of the last two decades, Nicão is out to capture more fantastic memories with great people.
